Description
The Granada Geopark brings together three geological and cultural phenomena that rarely coincide in Europe: an interior continental desert, a first-rate megalithic complex, and a sedimentary basin with millions of years of history visible in the landscape. Our excursion traverses this UNESCO-declared Geopark from north to south, with an expert guide who contextualizes each stop from the perspectives of geology, prehistory, and local ethnography.
The journey begins at the Acequia del Toril, a water catchment system excavated in the ground over centuries, where the riverbank vegetation contrasts with the arid surrounding landscape. From there, our route advances to Gorafe, the heart of the Granada desert and home to Gorafe Megalithic Park, one of the largest groups of dolmens in the Iberian Peninsula with over 240 prehistoric burials distributed across the slopes of the gorge. The journey continues with a stop at the Jabalcón Viewpoint, in Zújar, where our guide provides a complete geological reading of the basin. The excursion includes lunch at a local restaurant with traditional gastronomy from the area.
