Description
South of Sierra Nevada, where the mountain begins to break up into valleys and ravines, La Alpujarra preserves one of the most unique ways of life in Andalusia. White villages nested into the hillside, irrigation channels that still carry meltwater and agricultural terraces that draw the landscape as they did centuries ago.
Our route from Granada goes into the Barranco de Poqueira crossing the historic Puente de Tablate, the former natural gateway to this mountain region, leaving Lanjarón and Órgiva behind until reaching the heart of the valley.
In Pampaneira, the cobblestone streets preserve traditional architecture among artisan shops and cold-water fountains. In Pórtugos, Fuente Agria appears in the middle of the forest with its characteristic reddish color. And in Trevélez, the highest village in La Alpujarra, the dry mountain air continues to slowly cure the hams in drying houses open to the mountain.
We end the day in Capileira, where we enjoy a traditional lunch based on the authentic alpujarreño dish and seasonal recipes, with free time to stroll through the village.
It is not a route to be traveled, but a landscape to be crossed.
